Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Thursday emphasised the importance of aligning the country’s spatial planning and development with the Government’s goals for its “rapid” economic growth and the United Nations' sustainable development goals.

Davitashvili emphasised the need to prioritise Georgia’s biodiversity, protected areas and tourism potential while developing the concept.

It is important to develop equal opportunities in the country at both central and regional levels. Additionally, our country boasts significant biodiversity, protected areas, tourist potential, recreational spaces, and all of these are top priorities for us. It is crucial to prioritise them correctly, which will first be reflected in the unified spatial development concept and then in a more detailed plan”, he said.

Speaking at the Georgia National Urban Forum, Davitashvili highlighted the need for coordinated spatial planning to avert “chaotic” development and achieve sustainable growth.

The proper development of spatial planning and infrastructure in Georgia is crucial for creating a sustainable living environment for our citizens and for fostering economic growth”, he said.

Due to its location and terrain, the country plays a vital role as a transit hub, connecting Europe and Asia. It is an important part of the Middle Corridor [logistics route] and in this regard, the proper development of transport and logistics infrastructure together with urban development has a great role”, the Minister said.
