Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Monday highlighted the role of the domestic construction sector in driving economic growth and development in the country, noting the industry had seen a 17 percent increase in real added value in 2023 and contributed 7.9 percent to the growth of the domestic economy.

Speaking at the seventh international quality conference of the Georgian representation of HeidelbergCement company, Davitashvili stressed the importance of “quality growth” in “ensuring sustainability in the long run” over “pursuing economic development at any cost”.

He noted reforms implemented to facilitate “rapid and qualitative” development of the construction sector, including employment of “over 100,000 people” within the industry.

The Minister also highlighted the role of market supervision and spatial and urban development, underscoring “successful reforms” undertaken by the Ministry. He also mentioned the upcoming establishment of a market supervision agency to regulate the availability of potentially hazardous products, with a specific focus on the construction sector.

Davitashvili also emphasised the importance of qualified personnel in the construction industry and highlighted the implementation of a certification system for architects and construction engineers.

The Ministry said the certification aimed to ensure paperwork prepared by professionals met international standards and “improved the overall expertise” in the industry.

In line with bringing the construction sector closer to the European model, the Ministry is coordinating the implementation of Eurocodes to enhance the safety, durability, and sustainability of constructions”, the Minister said.

Davitashvili also highlighted efforts towards “sustainable spatial development and correct urban planning” as part of the work of the Spatial and Urban Development Agency since 2022.
