Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday thanked the country’s national football team for having “played with honour” in their European Championship defeat to Turkey and scoring the first-ever goal for Georgia at the tournament.

The Government head was in the stands for the team's inaugural Euro 2024 match, along with cabinet members and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.

"A big thank you to the boys for playing [with honour]! Thank you for the first-ever goal at the European Championship! Only luck prevented us today from collecting one point! Everything is still ahead!", the Prime Minister said.

The team lost 3:1 in their opening Group F game, with matches against the Czech Republic and Portugal coming up next.
