The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia on Tuesday said law enforcement officers had arrested an individual born in 1981 on charges of trafficking.

The body said the individual had forced four individuals to work in their farm under psychological pressure and threats of physical retribution, restricting them from leaving the premises and using their mobile phones.

The detained individual forced all four of the [victims] to follow the orders, even if they were not related to work on the farm. If the victims refused to comply with the demands, or the perpetrator was left dissatisfied with the work done, they were physically abused”, the body said.

The investigation into the case was carried out by employees of the Main Division of the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry, the Department for Combating Trafficking and Illegal Migration, the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia and the Labour Inspection Service of the Ministry of Health.

The crime is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
