PM sends condolences after acclaimed Georgian soprano Lamara Chkonia dies at 93

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday sent his condolences to the family and relatives of the country’s acclaimed soprano singer Lamara Chkonia, who died at the age of 93.
 

Kobakhidze said Chkhonia’s “particularly individual and characteristic performances” would occupy an “honourable place in the history of Georgian opera”.
 

Chkhonia was a laureate of several international competitions and performed across the countries of the former Soviet Union, as well as on the stages of opera theatres in Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Japan.
 

Her repertoire included opera classic La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and Daisi by the celebrated 20th century Georgian composer Zakaria Paliashvili.
