Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party and the head of the faction in the Parliament, on Thursday said the party would look to gain a constitutional majority and not just a “simple victory” in the general elections in October.
In his press comments following the GD Congress that nominated Irakli Garibashvili, the outgoing Prime Minister, as the party Chair earlier during the day and Irakli Kobakhidze, the incumbent party Chair, as his replacement on Thursday, Mdinaradze alleged the “relatively vacant” opposition field posed “no obstacles” for the current ruling power.
GD would need to win at least 113 seats in the 150-member Parliament to win the constitutional majority in the legislative body.
The official also expressed confidence the combined “expertise, leadership, and patriotism” of Garibashvili and Kobakhidze would “fortify both the party and the Government”, fostering “unity and effectiveness” to ensure “further economic growth”, de-occupation of the country’s territories, alleviation of poverty and work for European integration.
