Mikheil Sarjveladze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament's Committee on Human Rights, on Tuesday highlighted the “constructive discussion” with domestic opposition and the civil sector on Monday that had reviewed work for the fulfilment of the conditions outlined for the country to open the European Union accession talks.

In his comments to the Imedi TV channel, Sarjveladze said that the closed-door meeting had proceeded “smoothly and calmly, without complications”, and noted “the goal” of the meeting - “to show everyone that we [ruling team and domestic opposition] can sit and work together” - was accomplished.

He emphasised the meeting focused on addressing specific issues, including the judiciary reform, with all the stakeholders exchanging views on the matter.

By initiating the meeting, the Government has taken a step and demonstrated its commitment to the inclusive process and active participation of all stakeholders in fulfilling EU recommendations, Sarjveladze noted.

The working meeting on the implementation of the EU’s nine priorities was hosted by the Georgian Parliament on Monday, involving MPs from the ruling GD party, representatives of the opposition and the civil sector.

The meeting came following an action plan unveiled by the Government in late December to meet the nine conditions outlined by the European Commission in November.
