Georgian officials on Monday highlighted the work of the outgoing Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s after he announced his exit from the position of the head of the Government earlier during the day.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, emphasised the country receiving the European Union membership candidate status and its “economic advancement” as two of Garibashvili’s accomplishments and extended his gratitude to the official for “years of service”.
Mdinaradze said a meeting of the GD Political Council last week had discussed the resignation, as well as the body’s proposal for the PM to continue working in the position before this year’s parliamentary elections in the fall, adding Garibashvili had made the decision to exit the position now to give his successor an “opportunity to use the entire period to form a new team, visions and approaches”.
In his comments to Imedi TV, Archil Talakvadze, the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, said Garibashvili had been able to “successfully perform difficult and important tasks” for three years, with the official extending his gratitude to the outgoing PM.
It was the progress achieved on the path of Georgia's European integration, provision of economic development, reforms carried out in the regions, infrastructural projects and in general, the renewal of the country's strategic infrastructure [he should be credited for]”, he added.
Rati Bregadze, the country’s Minister of Justice, also praised Garibashvili’s work and mentioned the EU membership candidate status as “the greatest historic achievement of modern Georgia” as the result of the outgoing official’s “greatest efforts”.
The Minister highlighted Garibashvili’s “leadership” and “personal characteristics” and added his “encouragement and commitment” had led to” all outstanding accomplishments” his office had started, completed or was pursuing.
Garibashvili became the Prime Minister for the second term in 2021, having held the position of the head of the Government between 2013-2015.
