Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Saturday paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which marks the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Today we remember the Holocaust - the greatest tragedy in human history”, Garibashvili noted while commemorating “millions of innocent people” who had fallen victim to “unheard-of atrocities” and paying “special respect” to those who miraculously survived.

The Head of the Government stressed the Holocaust was a “constant reminder” of the responsibility of the world community, governments and each individual to “stand up against” hatred and intolerance and to build together “a world of peace, understanding and compassion”.

Approximately six million Jewish people died in the Holocaust, while more than 1.1 million were killed at Auschwitz - the largest of the concentration camps set up by Nazi Germany. Auschwitz was liberated by the Red Army on January 27, 1945.
