Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Friday congratulated Georgian people and the Government on receiving the European Union membership candidate status, in comments during his official visit to the country.

In this process, I especially emphasise the role of the Government under the leadership of Irakli Garibashvili, as well as the role of the people. This is a historic event for Georgia and the entire region”, Pashinyan said at the joint press conference with his counterpart.

Georgia officially applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022, shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, after accelerating the initial plan to submit the membership application by 2024.

The country was granted the candidate status in December on the understanding that steps set out in the European Commission recommendation in November would be taken.
