A “modern, international-standard” state clinic will be built on the base of the Tbilisi-based Central University Clinic, also known as the Republican Hospital, the Government Administration announced on Monday.

Revealed at the weekly Government meeting by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, the decision follows studies of financial and infrastructural conditions of the current venue with the involvement of Georgian and international experts.

According to the specialists' conclusion, in order for the clinic to meet international standards, the reconstruction of the building is in most cases impossible and unprofitable. Accordingly, it is planned to dismantle the old building and build a multidisciplinary, high-tech medical institution on its base”, the PM said.

Garibashvili added some of the employees of the Hospital had already been moved to “various state clinics”, with others set to be offered work at alternate facilities.

We want to emphasise that no employee will be left without a job and all will be provided with an alternative employment offer or an unprecedented decent compensation”, he said.

The Administration said the Hospital would also maintain the status of a university clinic, which meant “full integration” of future doctors in clinical activities and provision of “appropriate” infrastructure.

The new Clinic will have a capacity of over 500 patient beds, an outpatient facility and a day hospital with more than 100 beds, as well as children's oncology and haematology departments, a central blood bank, a Good Distribution Practice-standard pharmacy, training spaces and a medical library.

The Ministry is starting procurement procedures for dismantling of the existing venue and design works for the new Clinic. The Administration said procurement of design works would be carried out “in full compliance with procedures of the World Bank”, enabling international companies to participate.
