Deepening of the cooperation between Georgia and the European Union was discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, and Pawel Herczynski, the European Union Ambassador to Georgia.
The officials reviewed development of the ties and implementation of the bloc’s conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status, the press office of the ruling party said.
The discussion comes amid the ongoing work for the country to meet the conditions, outlined by the European Commission and formally set out by the European Council last year.
In the latter’s decision, the EU membership candidate status was granted to Ukraine and Moldova, with the body saying it would be ready to grant the same status to Georgia once the outstanding priorities outlined in the conditions were met.
Kobakhidze and Herczynski also discussed the latest developments on the domestic political arena in their meeting.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, the executive secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday said a “radical part” of the domestic opposition was “sabotaging” the implementation of European Union conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status.
Existing threats and challenges in the Black Sea region on the backdrop of a “deteriorating security environment” were discussed on Monday in a meeting between the Georgian defence minister Juansher Burchuladze and Pawel Herczynski, the European Union ambassador to Georgia.
Peter Fischer, the German ambassador to Georgia, on Wednesday said the process of the country implementing the European Union conditions for receiving the membership candidate status should be “inclusive, democratic and pluralistic”.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday said the Georgian government was following “diligently” each recommendation of the European Union for granting the country the membership candidate status, and expressed his hope for a “positive” political decision from the bloc.
Pawel Herczynski, the European Union Ambassador to Georgia, on Monday said the European Commission and EU member states would “do everything to help you and we hope for a positive result” in the bloc’s assessment of the country’s implementation of conditions for receiving a EU membership candidate status.
Pawel Herczynski, the European Union Ambassador to Georgia, on Wednesday held the second round of his meetings with officials of the Georgian Parliament to review the process of the implementation of the European Union conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status.
The European Parliament on Wednesday approved its annual report on the implementation of the common foreign and security policy that said the “future of the peoples of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia as well as the Western Balkans lies within the EU”.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday said he hoped the European Union would make a "fair decision" on granting Georgia the membership candidate status by the end of the year.
