Hunting of migratory birds is prohibited throughout Georgia starting today, after the Environmental Protection Ministry’s Department of Environmental Supervision announced the incoming restrictions on Tuesday.

The body said the regulation was coming into force a day after the closing of the hunting season, with offenders set to face fines.

The fines will be compounded by compensation for “harm caused to the environment”, while in cases of “significant damage to the environment” the offenders could face criminal charges.

Weapons and hunted birds can be confiscated from those charged with violations, with hunters facing the risk of also losing their licence to bear arms.

The Department also said its professionals would ensure “stricter” preventative control of the regulations across the country starting on Tuesday.
