Buildings throughout municipalities across Georgia that “distort the appearance” of their localities or pose safety risk due to their dilapidated conditions will be dismantled or repaired by local authorities, Infrastructure Minister Irakli Karseladze said on Monday.

Karseladze said the Government had approved a decree on granting municipalities the mandate to address restoration or removal of select buildings.

Buildings not subject to dismantling but [representing an interest] for privatisation will be included in the privatisation list. Before that, we will make sure their external appearance matches the environment and that the necessary minimum requirements are met", the Minister added.

Karseladze’s office said 1,263 buildings and structures had been identified to fall into the categories, with works to start on the facilities this year.

In his comments on updates of the Ministry’s work, the official also noted about 600 buildings had been “completely renovated” and 92 squares built or repaired under the Renewed Regions programme, with over ₾400 million ($152 mln) spent.

The programme will be “actively” continued in 2023, he added.
