Ruling party nominates candidates for midterm elections

The ruling Georgian Dream party on Wednesday nominated candidates for the April 29 midterm elections for the member of the Parliament for the country’s western Poti, Senaki and Khobi constituency, and two mayors in Tsageri and Terjola municipalities.
The seats became vacant following the resignation of Tsageri Mayor Giorgi Nemsadze from the party, and the passing away of Poti, Senaki and Khobi MP Irakli Khakhubia and Terjola Mayor Lasha Gogiashvili, last year.
The party has nominated Giorgi Khakhubia, the son of the deceased lawmaker, to run for the MP seat, while Levan Zalkaliani, the former Deputy Government Representative for Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region in the country’s west, has been selected as the Tsageri Mayor nominee.
Manuchar Robakidze, the former Deputy Mayor in Terjola municipality in 2021 and acting Mayor since 2022, will run for the mayoral position in the forthcoming race.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said recently there will be no elections in the next three years, as the political situation has largely stabilised in the country, adding that it is now time to work, and that the government must help Georgian citizens as much as possible.
The evaluations of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe on electoral amendments implemented by Georgian authorities with the goal of gaining the European Union membership candidate status are “clearly positive”, Givi Mikanadze, a ruling Georgian Dream party MP, said on Monday.
Irakli Khakhubia, an MP of the ruling Georgian Dream party, was found dead in his home on Thursday, local media has reported.
Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili on Sunday expressed “deep sadness” following the death of Lasha Gogiashvili, the mayor of western Georgia’s Terjola town.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday summarised the extraordinary elections and by-elections held in ten municipalities of Georgia and said the ruling party had improved the results of 2021 municipal elections in all electoral districts.
Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and the Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday claimed the credibility and political support for the domestic opposition had been “diminished to zero”, following a round of elections and by-elections in 10 municipalities across the country.
