Ruling party head: Georgian Dream improves 2021 municipal elections results by winning in all electoral districts

“The radical opposition could not dare to put up a candidate in any district, which is a proof that they are aware of the Georgian Dream party’s high rating and their own low rating”, the official stressed at the briefing, adding despite the “limited competition” in the elections, a high turnout had been recorded. Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday summarised the extraordinary elections and by-elections held in ten municipalities of Georgia and said the ruling party had improved the results of 2021 municipal elections in all electoral districts.

The ruling party’s candidates for the election of majoritarian MPs in Poti, Senaki and Khobi received more than 27,000 votes, compared to the 2021 results when the party had received 21,000 votes, Kobakhidze emphasised.

The radical opposition could not dare to put up a candidate in any district, which is a proof that they are aware of the Georgian Dream party’s high rating and their own low rating”, the official stressed at the briefing, adding despite the “limited competition” in the elections, a high turnout had been recorded.

He also highlighted the significance of using “large-scale” electronic voting for the first time in the country, as it would help to hold the 2024 Parliamentary elections “properly”. Kobakhidze thanked everyone involved in the elections, who were accountable for holding it “decently”, as well as voters for their participation and expressing confidence in the Georgian Dream team.

A total of 55,363 voters took part in the elections in all ten municipalities, with the highest turnout being recorded in Akhaltsikhe, where 47.8 percent of voters went to the polling stations, the Central Election Commission said.

By the preliminary results, the Georgian Dream party candidates have been elected in all ten municipalities, including majoritarian members of the Parliament in Poti, Senaki and Khobi, majoritarian members of city councils (Sakrebulo) in Gurjaani, Tianeti, Akhaltsikhe, Tkibuli and Kutaisi, as well as mayors of Tsageri and Terjola. Kobakhidze congratulated the members of the Georgian Dream team on their election.
