The Georgian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday condemned the meeting between Aslan Bzhania, the representative of the occupation regime of Georgia’s Russia-occupied Abkhazia and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

In its statement, the Ministry said the action “blatantly” violated Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and noted it was an “attempt to legitimise” the Russian occupation regime.

We call on Belarus to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders and to cease taking the actions, which contradict the fundamental principles and norms of international law” the foreign office stated.

Earlier today Lukashenko and Bzhania held a meeting in Belarus’s capital city of Minsk, where the Belarusian President said he could not understand why the Georgian Government reacted “so sharply” to the meetings with Abkhazians and noted that these meetings “might serve” friendship between Georgians and Abkhazians.
