Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Thursday said the foreign ministry had taken “all the relevant” diplomatic steps regarding the visit of Belarusian president Aleksandr Lukashenko to Georgia’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia region in September.
In his address to the parliament, Darchiashvili called the visit “particularly” sensitive for Georgia and said Anatoly Lis, the ambassador of Belarus to Georgia, had been summoned to the ministry after the visit for “an explanation”.
Darchiashvili expressed hope that Belarus would “firmly” return to their position of supporting Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty. “I am very optimistic that similar manifestations that harm our country will not occur in the future”, the minister added.
The Georgian official also made comments on the mobilisation of the population in the occupied territories and said he saw the question “more” from the human rights point of view, noting the ministry has been “very actively” trying to raise the issue with Georgia’s international partners.
