The Georgian Interior Ministry will ensure the presence of public order officers in all major cities of the country, in the next phase of the new “community-oriented” approach to policing, Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri told the Georgian Parliament on Tuesday.

In his address to the MPs, Gomelauri said the officers, tasked with responding to domestic violence, neighbourhood disputes, illegal migration and vulnerable groups, would be expanded to cities following their employment in capital Tbilisi and the nearby city of Rustavi.

The Minister said the move was serving the improvement of the “quality of public safety” under the ongoing reform of the Criminal Police.

The first crews of public order officers appeared in Tbilisi in 2018, with their tasks also including planning and implementation of preventative activities and work with governmental and non-governmental agencies for the goal.
