Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Rules and Procedural Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, on Thursday highlighted the Hungarian Government’s “reasonable assessment” of the situation around the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Kadagishvili was commenting on Polish media reports on Wednesday that said Hungary had blocked a European Union protest to the Georgian authorities over Saakashvili.

The Committee Chair said the policy “directed against” Georgia on the matter of the former official could not “remain a subject of blackmail” against the country.

Hungary is a state that assesses reasonably the situation in Georgia. I mean that the law must be the law in the country, and the policy directed against the country cannot remain a subject of blackmail [...]”, the Parliament official said.

The comments follow the European Parliament’s adoption on Wednesday of a resolution that said Bidzina Ivanishvili, the former Prime Minister and the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, was “responsible” for the controversial circumstances around the health of Saakashvili.
