Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday said that “even the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union would envy” the resolution on the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili adopted by the European Parliament on Wednesday.

Kobakhidze was commenting on the resolution that said Bidzina Ivanishvili, the former Prime Minister and the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, was “responsible” for the controversial circumstances around the health of Saakashvili.

Kobakhidze claimed the Georgian public had become “accustomed to absurd entries” in EP resolutions, which he called a “very unfortunate phenomenon”.

The GD official also pointed out the ruling team was being “as careful as possible” in its comments about European Union institutions by highlighting only specific MEPs in their criticisms, but added the “systemic problem” of the European Parliament had become “even clearer” with the latest resolution.

In this case, the public sees everything. This is a systemic problem with this institution called the European Parliament. This is a very serious problem, and frankly, even the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union would envy such a decision”, he said.

“I remember very well what was happening in the late 80s, [when] the sessions of the Supreme Council of the USSR were sometimes broadcast. What happened there [is] the same thing happened in the European Parliament today, which is a disaster”, Kobakhidze added.

The party Chair claimed while the initiators of the resolution “know everything very well” about circumstances around Saakashvili, they “consciously protect the criminal political force” - in reference to the United National Movement opposition - because “they have a specific political interest”.

In his comments on the resolution, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said EP resolutions on Georgia had become “sources of misinformation and attacks” on the country, in what he called a “very unfortunate development”.
