Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Saturday said the “main goal, mission and dream” of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the former PM and founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, before and after coming into politics, were the unification of the country.

In his comments to the media, after Ivaniashvili was elected the honorary Chair of the GD party at the congress meeting of the ruling party, Garibashvili highlighted Ivanishvili’s “unique and irreplaceable” role in national issues.

Ruling party can “fully protect” country’s national identity, restore sovereignty, territorial integrity, join EU - honorary Chair Ivanishvili

The PM emphasised the “invaluable” role of Ivanishvili in the last three years and highlighted the importance of having consultations with him, as the country was going through “such difficult times”, to “properly navigate in this turbulent situation”. “When the team makes a decision, [we] try to listen to the smart and wise opinion to get advice” he added.

I would like to mention once again that it is the merit of Bidzina Ivanishvili that over the last 30 years, after we regained independence, an unprecedented and continuous peace and stability have been established in our country, which the Georgian people had never experienced before under any ruling team”, Garibashvili stressed.

Ivanishvili's role is greater not only as the former PM but mainly as the founder of the ruling party, the main creator of the 2012 victory and all the following victories, as well as this stable period, the Head of the Government told the media.

If Ivanishvili had not come into politics in 2012, [...] we might not have had a country at all. Of course, if the previous oppressive, criminal government had remained in power in 2012, today the country would have been involved in the war, which means practically destroying our country. We could lose our sovereignty and our country could be completely destroyed [without Ivanishvili]”, he added.

“We are an inseparable part of the rest of the world, and naturally, what is happening in the region and today's geopolitical situation, changing every day, certainly affect our country. The international order, the world order are changing. [...] In [...] the most difficult political situation, Ivanishvili’s role is of course crucial and unique”, the PM noted while highlighting the necessity of Ivanishvili’s return to politics.

He also emphasised that the former PM’s return would strengthen the ruling Georgian Dream party and stabilise the situation in the country, also pointing out Ivanishvili’s role in the parliamentary elections of 2024, where he expected the GD to “win this election with a big advantage”.

Today, our people need “even more reassurance, stability and a highly predictable and stable future”, the Head of the Government noted, adding as before, Ivanishvili, the guarantor of all these - peace, stability and a better future, would perform his role and mission from the position of the honorary Chair of the party.
