Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Tuesday said the Government of the ruling Georgian Dream party was “consistently implementing” the policy that was “bringing the country closer to the European family”.

Darchiashvili noted the “historic” decision of the European Council to grant the country the EU membership candidate status earlier this month was “very important” and the Government continued to move towards European integration.

We have said it many times and we will not get tired of repeating it, [because] we want our opponents to listen to it often - it was under our Government that Georgia, Georgian citizens actually saw what the process of European integration [...] means, and we made this foreign policy priority a constitutional norm”, he said.

The top Georgian diplomat stressed the Government was “completely” focused on ensuring that the country had specific “tangible” results on its European integration path.

Darchiashvili also said European integration was moving on the line of “irreversible” reforms.

We have proven it many times and we always say that we are not afraid to do any homework. We have proven this in recent years. Very recently, yesterday, we published a nine-point plan, an action plan. After the European Commission made a positive recommendation to the European Council, recommendations followed and we immediately started working on it”, he continued.

The official added the reforms were “primarily intended for our people and the well-being of our country”.

European partners have recognised our successful reform agenda, which has delivered specific tangible results. Our people are wise, people are looking at the specific results and efforts that the Georgian Government is making with the very deep involvement of the Georgian Prime Minister in fulfilling foreign policy priorities”, he continued.

Darchiashvili added the Georgian Government had a “specific agenda”, the mandate of the citizens and support to fulfil their will and bring the country “even closer” to the “European family”, calling the development “the way to create a better future for our next generation”.
