Kakha Kaladze, the Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party and Tbilisi Mayor, on Wednesday said the “policy and consistency” shown by the ruling Georgian Dream party since 2012 had resulted in the country receiving the European Union membership candidate status earlier this month.

In an interview with Imedi TV, Kaladze alleged unspecified domestic politicians and opposition parties had “done everything to prevent” the country from receiving the candidate status.

There are politicians and political parties who wanted the country to receive the EU membership candidate status, but there were those who did everything to prevent us from receiving the status. [Their actions took place] inside the country, through sabotage, or outside the country”, he claimed.

“One can be a representative of the opposition, and we can have different opinions, but when it comes to foreign policy and the European integration of the country, we should all be united. But they have a different interest”, the official added.

Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Tuesday said the Government of the ruling Georgian Dream party was “consistently implementing” the policy that was “bringing the country closer to the European family”.
