A Georgian citizen who was illegally arrested near the Russian-occupied village of Perevi in central Georgia last year has been released from prison in the occupied Tskhinvali region, the Georgian State Security Service confirmed on Tuesday.

Gela Iobashvili was released following state authorities’ "active use" of the hotline mechanism - designated for developments along the occupation line - and other tools, the body said.

The issue of Iobashvili’s release from illegal detention was also discussed at a recent meeting of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism, a platform facilitating talks between the Georgian Government and de facto authorities, it added.

The Service also said the Government and its international partners were “actively working” to ensure release of all Georgian citizens in illegal custody in the Russian-occupied territories.
