Georgian fencer Sandro Bazadze was named the world’s best sabre fencer of the 2022-2023 years season, claiming an honorary prize of the International Fencing Federation.

Bazadze, who has become the first Georgian fencer to claim the highest award in fencing, on Saturday was awarded at the International Fencing Federation Congress, hosted in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh.
The 30-year-old, at the top of the International Fencing Federation ranking, is a two-time European champion and has finished in the top three in his 12th consecutive competition, including the World and European Championships, Grand Prix and World Cup contests over the 2022-2023 season.
Earlier yesterday, the Congress selected Georgia’s capital city of Tbilisi, with 120 votes, to host the 2025 World Fencing Championships.
