The Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia has charged a foreign national in absentia for embezzlement of ₾416,451 ($154,030) from citizens of the country in a car dealership scheme, the state body said on Thursday.

The Office said its investigation had shown the alleged offender had registered the company Premium Car Georgia and was operating from abroad through false promotion of online vehicle import services.

It added the individual had received the sum from 17 customers in exchange for supposed purchase and delivery of vehicles from abroad.

The Office said the court had approved detention in absentia as a preventive measure against the alleged offender, and added search operations were ongoing for the wanted individual.
