Legal and technical aspects of implementation of the 1958 United Nations agreement on production of vehicles and automotive parts in Georgia were discussed on Tuesday in a meeting between the country’s Deputy Economy Minister Guram Guramishvili and representatives of the Sustainable Transport Division of the UN Economic Commission for Europe.

The Ministry of Economy said the experts highlighted roles of bodies authorised with approving types of vehicles and auto parts, providing technical service and manufacture, and discussed examples in place in European countries.

Guramishvili said the implementation of the UN agreement with the country’s legislation would provide the opportunity to produce a “completely new type” of industrial products, which would be competitive both on local and international markets.

He added “active work” was being carried out to develop infrastructure for confirming the quality of vehicle transport products in Georgia, activities of which would be internationally recognised.

The Ministry added the Georgian Government had amended the Law on Motor Transport in October last year to implement the UN agreement into the country’s legislation, with technical regulations set to come into force starting on December 1.
