Georgia Barbarians, the rugby club of the American state, will visit Georgia after the governing bodies of the state and the country agreed to form closer ties on Monday.

Georgian Rugby Vice President Nikoloz Alavidze and Steve Mace, the President of the Georgia Rugby Union, agreed to host a cultural exchange between the teams and governing institutions of the sport.

The US state body for the sport said in a social media post Alavidze had given a “wonderful lesson” in the video call on the history of the sport in the country and shared insight on the “best practices on growing youth, women’s, and all grassroots rugby”.

“An invitation was extended to the Georgia Rugby Union, and our Georgia Barbarians, from the Georgian Rugby Union. An invitation to come and visit their country. To absorb its history, beauty, and national culture. But also, the rugby culture of the country of Georgia. Most importantly, to play some rugby!”, the announcement by the state Union noted.

The two institutions will agree specifics of the exchange at a later date, it added.

The development comes after the Georgia Rugby Union on Sunday said it would support the Georgian national team at the next Rugby World Cup this year.

While the United States national team has failed to secure a spot at the tournament, Mace said instead the Lelos would “hear our cheers of support from across the sea on your Rugby World Cup match days”.
