Tbilisi “strongly condemns” Russia’s move to hold illegal elections in Ukraine’s occupied regions

Tamar Taliashvili, Georgia's Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, on Wednesday said the Georgian Government “strongly condemned” Russia’s intention to hold illegal municipal elections in Ukraine’s occupied Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions this fall.

In her social media post, the Georgian official stressed her country had witnessed “systematic conduct” of illegal elections in its own Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
The Russian Central Election Commission adopted a resolution in the summer to hold the “elections” in Ukraine’s occupied territories on September 10, amid Moscow’s ongoing invasion of the country.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday reaffirmed his Government's support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in its ongoing war with Russia, as well as for seeing an end to the war “in the shortest time possible”.
Claire Bazy Malaurie, the newly appointed Head of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe, on Friday expressed readiness to further strengthen cooperation with Georgia and praised the country’s “active communication” with the body to meet the European Union’s 12-point conditions for obtaining the bloc’s membership candidate status.
Prospects of Georgia's European integration and ongoing work in the process were discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between the Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili and Tamar Taliashvili, the newly appointed representative of the country to the Council of Europe.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Friday highlighted Georgia’s “full solidarity” with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people since the outbreak of the war in the country, adding the support was evidenced by “appropriate political and diplomatic steps” in bilateral or multilateral formats.
