Mikheil Sarjveladze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament's Committee on Human Rights, on Wednesday said the ruling Georgian Dream party Government had made a “huge” effort to ensure the human rights protection system in the country was "as smooth as possible" .
Sarjveladze’s comment followed the European Union’s annual report on Human Rights and Democracy in the World, published on Tuesday, which said that “overall, Georgia has a solid human rights framework, including legislations and policies in line with international and European standards”.
It is very good news - the human rights protection system of Georgia is assessed as well-functioning. It has an unequivocally positive assessment. It is very important that this is the result of a huge amount of work that has been done in recent years”, Sarjveladze said.
The Parliament official alleged the human rights record had been the "most failed area" under the previous United National Movement party Government.
Under the [current] Government, a huge effort has been made to ensure [...] human rights protection is promoted as much as possible [and] strengthened, and that the system is smooth”, Sarjveladze concluded.
