Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Friday addressed the issue of surrogacy and called it a “sensitive” question at the Parliament.

Responding to a comment of one of the MPs after presenting the Government’s annual report to the legislative body, Garibashvili said the state could not control and follow the taking away of the children of surrogacy from the country and thus, the Government had developed the practices of European countries in this regard and decided that surrogacy would be allowed only for Georgian citizens.

He also referred to the problem of gender-based abortions and said tens of thousands of abortions were done every year in the country, noting additional information campaigns were needed for young couples and people in this regard.

The Government has been working on the “comprehensive package” for strengthening families to more motivate young couples to have children, Garibashvili noted.

The Head of the Government also touched on the LGBT propaganda and said some issues were “unacceptable” for the country’s culture, traditions and religion, as the absolute majority of the Georgian population, 90 percent, supported family values.
