Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Rules and Procedural Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, on Thursday said the ruling team had “positive” expectations regarding the oral report by the European Commission on the implementation of the European Union conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status.
“I think that in the end the assessment will be positive. I think the same statement will be made about polarisation [of the domestic political scene], that [it] has not been overcome. Our position is known - it was the non-granting of the candidate status that deepened the polarisation”, Kadagishvili said.
As for the implementation of the rest of the conditions, perhaps they will consider that some of them have been fully implemented, and in some conditions more can be done. Therefore, I think that in the end, the assessment will be directed towards the point that Georgia's expectations for the candidate status are increased rather than decreased”, he noted.
Today, the reforms implemented by Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova will be discussed at a meeting of EU member states’ foreign ministers in Stockholm, where European Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi will make an oral presentation.
The interim report will cover the implementation of the reforms that Brussels has determined for the three countries.
