Georgian PM, Public Defender discuss human rights protection

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the country’s Public Defender Levan Ioseliani on Friday discussed the Government’s work for human rights protection in a meeting at the Government office.
The discussion reviewed the country’s progress in the area over the past decade since the Georgian Dream Government took office in 2012, the Government Administration said.
Highlighting “key improvements” for human rights over the past 10 years, the sides also stressed the importance of the National Strategy for the Protection of Human Rights, of which the initial document covered the years between 2014-2020 and the latest version has been drawn up for the period through 2030.
The Parliament elected the opposition candidate Ioseliani for the Public Defender’s post in March.
The Georgian Parliament on Tuesday supported the candidacy of Levan Ioseliani, an opposition MP from the Citizens party, for the position of the Public Defender of Georgia, in a move that concluded a delayed period of candidate selection and vote for the position.
Niko Tatulashvili, the Georgian Prime Minister’s advisor for Human Rights, on Monday said the Government’s new National Human Rights Strategy, covering the years 2022-2030, ensured protection of “all basic human rights” and defined priorities in economic, social and civil rights.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Monday his Government had approved the National Strategy for Human Rights Protection for the years 2022-2030 following discussions with both international partners and domestic non-governmental organisations.
Last week the Georgian government approved the 2022-2024 national action plan for combating domestic violence and violence against women and ensuring protection of survivors, as well as the action plan on the implementation of the United Nations resolution on women, peace and security over the same period.
Levan Ioseliani, the Public Defender of Georgia, on Monday urged the country’s authorities to “use all international mechanisms” and ensure further engagement of the international community to “intensify” pressure on Russia to protect the rights of the people living in Georgia’s occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions, in his message on the 15th anniversary of the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia.
Levan Ioseliani, the Public Defender of Georgia, on Thursday met with Oleksandr Korniyenko, the Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament, in Kyiv, with discussions centred around fostering cooperation between the two nations in safeguarding human rights and addressing shared challenges.
