Professionals from the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation gathered in Georgia for the meeting of their Tourism Working Group and a capacity-building workshop between Monday and Tuesday, with the host country involved in an initiative on a free trade deal between member states.

Chaired by Georgia’s Deputy Economy Minister Genadi Arveladze, the meeting focused on the Silk Road project - designed to improve trade, drive investment in infrastructure and boost connectivity across Asia - and promoted regional cooperation, the Ministry said.

We [...] support the development of joint projects and transport corridors in energy, as well as the establishment of a joint management system of customs points, which will promote trade between countries”, Arveladze said in his welcoming address for the events.

The Asian Development Bank, one of the supporters of the programme of the events, said the gathering included a discussion on the CAREC Tourism Web Portal - a platform showcasing “key features”, country information and tourist sites along the Silk Road.

Additionally, a capacity building programme for public and private sectors was presented with the aim of enhancing tourism expertise.

CAREC is a partnership of 10 countries and aims to promote economic cooperation and development in the region, with Georgia designated as the Chair Country for this year’s gatherings.

The next ministerial meeting of CAREC will be hosted in the country in November, the Ministry of Economy said.
