Polarisation “problematic” point in EU recommendations, necessary to reduce radicalism in opposition - ruling party head

Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Sunday said polarisation was a “problematic” issue of the 12 priorities, outlined by the European Union in June for granting its membership candidate status to the country, as it could not be resolved by the Government’s reforms, it required “reduction of radicalism” in domestic opposition.
In his comments to the media, Kobakhidze stressed the opposition was not “taking any steps” to reduce radicalism and emphasised that the Government within its responsibility had fulfilled most of the priorities, adding the country’s international partners were “constantly” informed about the progress of the implementation process.
He said the Government continued to work “actively” to fulfil the EU recommendations and stressed the implementation of all the reforms would be completed by the end of June, adding “the country will be completely ready to receive the candidate status”, the local media said.
Unfortunately, last year the European Council made a disappointing decision for our [Georgian] society. We hope that the political decision to be taken by the European Council [in December] will be fair”, Kobakhidze noted.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday said Georgia would fulfil all 12 priorities set by the European Union for granting the country its membership candidate status, so that there would be “no reason left” for not granting Georgia the status in December.
Today Georgia is a sovereign state and no one can “summon” the country’s Prime Minister anywhere, unlike the previous Government and the former President Mikheil Saakashvili, who had been “summoned [several times in 2008] and instructed to do something”, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said on Saturday.
Kakha Kaladze, the Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party and Tbilisi Mayor, on Saturday said receiving the European Union membership candidate status was essential not only for its Government but for Georgia and the country’s future.
Maka Botchorishvili, the Chair of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Sunday said Georgia had already implemented most of the recommendations, outlined by the European Union last year for granting its membership candidate status and noted the country was expecting the bloc to “take a firm step” and grant Georgia the status based on “fair assessments”.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday said the party’s scheduled “important” meeting with domestic non-governmental organisations later in the day would discuss “all topics” related to the country’s European Union integration.
Georgia's European perspective and the 2024 Parliamentary elections in the country were discussed on Tuesday in a meeting between representatives of the Georgian Parliamentary opposition and Jonathan Djanogly, the Chair of the Georgia All-Party Parliamentary Groups in the British Parliament.
