Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Saturday said the Government, authorities and church needed to be “more involved” with the Georgian Diaspora abroad.
In his speech at the forum dedicated to the Day of the Georgian Diaspora, Garibashvili said he had personally experienced how difficult it was to be separated from his homeland and noted that diasporas should be strengthened “even more”, expressing readiness for it.
The PM emphasised, by his Government’s initiative, taking care of the diaspora was recognised as a “direct responsibility and obligation” of the Government on a constitutional level.
He said the country’s Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and the Parliament were involved in developing “interesting initiatives” for the diasporas and emphasised the Government, the legislative body and the Patriarchate of Georgia should develop new programmes.
Garibashvili highlighted the role of the Orthodox Church in this regard, uniting Georgians, including people of different political views. The Head of the Government expressed “full support” to the Patriarchate and the country’s diasporas.
The forum under the theme of the Strong Diaspora for Georgia's Unity, Peace and European Future was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Foreign Minister briefing the audience on important programmes of the Ministry.
Delighted to welcome our compatriots from all over the world at the Diaspora Forum. It is through their active engagement and work that we can better represent Georgia across the globe! A huge thank you to all of you! pic.twitter.com/JQRYJ14SM7

"The state recognises the important role of the Georgian diaspora in the development process of our country, it cannot be successful and complete without the Georgian diaspora”, Darchiashvili said, noting that the involvement of the diaspora in the current processes in the country was taken to a “high level” by the state, which was reflected in the country's development strategies and policy documents.
