Georgia’s Interior Ministry “deeply saddened” after two police officers killed in traffic accident

Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs on Wednesday sent its condolences to families of two officers of its Patrol Police Department who were killed in a traffic accident in the central-eastern Shida Kartli region on Tuesday.
The state body said a driver under the influence of alcohol and with previous conviction had crashed into a police vehicle parked next to a road while driving at a high speed.
Major Omar Kareli and Senior Lieutenant Vano Basanidze, born in 1972 and 1992 respectively, had been in the vehicle at the time of the impact and died in the crash.
The state body also said law enforcement officers had arrested the driver.
Deepening and strengthening cooperation between law enforcement of Georgia and Israel was discussed between the Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri and Yaakov Shabtai, the Commissioner of the Israeli National Police, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs said on Tuesday.
