Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said the ruling Georgian Dream party had managed to create a “free media space” in the country and given the journalist profession an opportunity for “dignified development”, in his message for World Press Freedom Day.

In comments on the date, Papuashvili said “fast and impartial” dissemination of information “significantly” determined the formation of “healthy public opinion” and progress of the country.

Today is World Press Freedom Day, established by the United Nations in 1993. This day should remind us all of the importance of media freedom and its democratic character. The Georgian Dream Government has been able to create a free media space in Georgia and give the journalist profession an opportunity for dignified development”, the Parliament official said.

The head of the legislative body stressed the journalist profession was a “great responsibility” towards the country and its citizens, “without which we would not be able to convey what we have to say to the citizens”.

I congratulate all journalists and people involved in the media who conscientiously serve their profession, the country and contribute to the strengthening of Georgian democracy on World Press Freedom Day”, he concluded.
