Georgian citizens in Sudan have been transferred to a neutral zone on the country’s border with Egypt border as the first phase of their evacuation from the conflict-stricken state has concluded, Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandre Khvtisiashvili said on Tuesday.
Khvtisiashvili said the nationals had been moved to a safer location, away from the capital Khartoum, and added their lives were not in danger.
“We can say that this evacuation was effectively carried out thanks to the assistance of our embassies, allies and organisations, and at present, not a single Georgian citizen is in Sudan. All have left the country in safety”, the Deputy Minister said.
He also revealed the citizens would “soon” be moved to Egypt before their eventual transfer to Georgia.
Thirty-three employees of two Georgian-based airlines were trapped in Sudan since April 15, amid the confrontation between the country’s regular army and a powerful paramilitary force that has killed more than 400 people and injured thousands according to the World Health Organisation.
