Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday announced the launch of a ₾1 billion ($398mln), five-year programme for renovation and development of infrastructure across the country.

At the weekly meeting of the Government, Garibashvili said the initiative would renovate cultural and historical monuments and facilities in large cities, resort locations and highland areas, as well as recreational zones of the country.

Venues and monuments in Borjomi, Bakuriani, Kutaisi, Tskaltubo, Telavi, Zugdidi, Batumi, Mtskheta, Stepantsminda, Mestia and Kazbegi will go under works as part of the effort.

“We already allocated ₾200 million ($79.69mln) for this purpose this year [...] Concepts will be developed, the Municipal Development Fund will start working actively on the implementation of this programme, [and] we will select the best architects [and] builders”, he told his team.

Our main task should be to gradually transform our country into a truly European-type state. It should be a well-maintained, developed, beautiful state [with such] cities, districts [and] villages”, Garibashvili said.

The PM highlighted a similar programme for urban development had been launched two years ago and covered 63 municipalities.

City centres have been upgraded, squares set up, [and] very large-scale works have been carried out [...] we allocated ₾500 million ($199.23mln) for this programme, which is still underway in several municipalities”, he said.

The PM also mentioned preparations for the Anaklia deep sea port project in the west, saying the Ministry of Economy was working to announce detailed information “soon”, with the construction aimed to launch in the fall.
