Pawel Herczynski, the European Union Ambassador to Georgia, on Tuesday said he hoped Georgia would become a member of the bloc, noting the outcome would “bring enormous benefits to the country”.

In his remarks, the European diplomat stressed EU membership meant “stability, peace, prosperity, and raising the standard of living”.

We will assess this progress [of Georgia] later this year, and 27 member states will decide on the next steps in December. I hope it will be a positive decision. I hope that Georgia will be granted candidate status. This is not the end of the route. Even if it happens, it is only yet another step toward EU membership. There will be many more steps”, Herczynski said.

He highlighted reaching the goal domestically required a “national consensus”, with all political forces working together in a spirit of “compromise, inclusivity, and constructiveness”.

So, the work is ongoing, and we will see. In the end, the decision will depend on the progress made by Georgia, and it will be in the hands of 27 EU members”, Herczynski concluded.
