Georgian FM, representatives of EEAS, European Commission discuss Georgia-EU agenda

The current issues of the Georgia-EU agenda and the progress made by the country on its European Union integration path, including fulfilling the 12-point conditions outlined by the European Council for granting the country candidate membership status, were discussed on Wednesday by Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili, the European External Action Service delegation and representatives of the European Commission.
The sides highlighted the “historic decision” [last June] of the European Council to grant Georgia the European perspective, thus moving the country into the enlargement package and “formally” opening its path to the EU, the Foreign Ministry said.

Darchiashvili emphasised the “full utilisation” of the potential of the Association Agreement [including the 2014-signed Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area agreement] would promote the economic and sectoral integration of Georgia into the EU and would “practically” prepare the country for membership. He also highlighted the Georgian Government’s readiness for integration.

The situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions was also noted, while the officials discussed bilateral relations and other current issues, including the security challenges in the Black Sea region.
The European External Action Service delegation on Wednesday visited the Odzisi crossing point in central Georgia, adjacent to the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region, to hear from the European Union Monitoring mission about the security situation and recent developments in the area.
The current situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied territories and near the occupation line, as well as security challenges in the country and “borderisation” activities on shifting the occupation line, was discussed on Wednesday by Grigol Liluashvili, the Head of the Georgian State Security Service and Toivo Klaar, the European Union's Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in the country.
Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Christian Danielsson, the Swedish State Secretary for European Union Affairs, reviewed Georgia’s fulfilment of the 12-point conditions outlined by the bloc last year for granting it the membership candidate status.
Cooperation between Georgia and Sweden, the former’s European Union integration process and the security environment in its region were discussed on Tuesday in a meeting between the Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Talman Andreas Norlén, the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament.
