EU Council President reaffirms bloc’s “commitment” to Georgia’s European path

Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, on Tuesday reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to Georgia’s European integration path after his meeting with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili in Brussels on Monday.

Welcoming the Georgian official’s role in “advancing the Georgia’s people aspirations [for Europe]” in his social media post, Michel called the Council’s decision last year to grant Georgia a European perspective a “historic opportunity” that “should not be missed”.
The meeting came following Zourabichvili’s trip to the United States earlier this month, where she met Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor to the President of the US, and was involved in the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women of the United Nations Economic and Social Council in New York.
Georgia’s "accelerated" European Union integration path and the security of the Black Sea region were discussed between President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili and Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in a phone call on Tuesday.
A “united stand” is required on both Georgia’s European Union membership bid and around Ukraine, President Salome Zourabichvili told the Georgian Parliament in her annual report on Monday.
The importance of granting the EU membership candidate status to Georgia and strengthening cooperation between the country and the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe to support democratic reforms were discussed on Tuesday by the Georgian president Salome Zourabichvili and the president of the assembly Tiny Kox.
Georgia must understand that the European perspective granted to the country by the European Parliament and the European Council is “extremely important”, President Salome Zourabichvili said in a joint press conference with Members of the European Parliament on Wednesday.
Oliver Varhelyi, the European Union Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, on Tuesday said the implementation of the bloc’s conditions for granting Georgia the membership candidate status was the only way for the country to move forward on its European path.
Givi Mikanadze, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday said the Georgian Parliament was on course to complete implementing the priorities set out by the European Commission last year for granting the country a European Union membership candidate status by the end of its spring session.
Aleko Elisashvili, an MP from the Citizens opposition party, on Wednesday called on the United National Movement party and other opposition groups to join the ongoing work at the Parliament for fulfilling the European Union conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status later this year.
Georgia’s European future and implementation of the 12 priorities outlined by the European Union last year for granting its membership candidate status to the country were discussed on Tuesday by Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and the President of the European Council Charles Michel.
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili on Tuesday reiterated the “unwavering will of the Georgian people to join the European family” at the meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission.
