Georgia’s Special Investigation Service has launched an investigation following an alleged physical assault of two cameramen and a reporter of the opposition-minded Formula TV channel, the agency announced on Thursday.
The inquiry follows an incident where Formula TV said its employees had been physically assaulted while recording an interview in one of the cafes in the Vake district of capital Tbilisi.
The Media Advocacy Coalition released a statement yesterday that said the unnamed alleged assailant had been arrested, while the victims of the incident had been interviewed by law enforcement.
In its statement, the Special Investigation Service said it would carry out “all necessary investigative and procedural actions” in a short period of time to identify the culprit and take subsequent measures.
Per the Georgian Criminal Code, the crime is punishable by a fine or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or by deprivation of the right to hold office for a term not exceeding three years.
