1.2 mln Georgian citizens spend 226 mln GEL on domestic tourism in 2021

About 1.2 million Georgian citizens aged 15 and above made 1.4 million monthly visits within the country in 2021 with a total expenditures amounting to 226 million GEL ($70 mln/€63.7 mln), the latest data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) show. 

In 2021, the monthly average number of domestic tourist visits by Georgian residents amounted to 662.6, which is an increase of 37.9 percent compared to the previous year.

The majority of the visits came on the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi (average 300,1 visits per month) and the western Imereti region (241,9 visits per month).

The top reasons for internal travel were:

  • Visiting friends/relatives – 46.9%
  • Visiting another property [summer cottage, house, etc.] – 15.9%
  • Shopping – 13.2% 
  • Health and medical care – 8.9%
  • Holiday/leisure – 8.1%
  • Business or professional – 3.5%
  • Religion/pilgrimage – 1.5%
  • Education/trainings – 0.2%

Last year, people aged 31-50 were among the most avid domestic travellers (38.4 percent), while 53.6 percent of visits were made by women, Geostat said.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, the monthly average number of visitors increased by 26.1 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
