Ruling party MP: ICC has confirmed Georgia’s occupation, ethnic cleansing by Russia

The International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague has confirmed Georgia’s occupation, ethnic cleansing and gross human rights violations by Russia, Sozar Subari, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, said in comments to this week’s ruling by the Court on torture of Georgian citizens during the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
In an interview with TV Imedi on Saturday, Subari noted the ICC verdict would assist the restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity.
The territorial integrity will be restored peacefully, with the efforts of the international community, but these documents [court verdicts] have a great importance in these terms,” he added.
On Thursday, The ICC issued arrest warrants against three de facto officials of Georgia's Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region for torture and ill-treatment of Georgian citizens during the 2008 conflict.
Following the announcement of the ICC decision, the Georgian Ministry of Justice pledged to continue working with the court in order to bring offenders to justice for crimes committed against Georgian civilians in the war that was followed by Russia’s ongoing occupation of two of Georgia’s regions.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has begun considering a total of 59 individual complaints against Russia over the Russia-Georgia 2008 war, which left tens of thousands displaced from their homes in the now-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region, the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) announced on Tuesday.
The European Court of Human Rights has declared inadmissible 370 individual complaints filed against Georgia by residents of the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region in connection to the 2008 Russia-Georgia war, Rati Bregadze, the Georgian Justice Minister, said at a briefing on Thursday.
The citizens living in Georgia’s Russian-occupied territories should know the Government’s position that the country’s territorial integrity can only be restored through peaceful means and not through use of force, Sozar Subari, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, said at a Parliament plenary sitting today.

Russia has established an “apartheid regime” in Georgia’s occupied regions, where ethnic discrimination of Georgians continues, Nikoloz Samkharadze, the head of the Georgian delegation to the OSCE parliamentary assembly and the chair of the parliament's foreign relations committee said on Saturday at the assembly’s autumn meeting in Warsaw.
Tamar Taliashvili, Georgia’s representative to the Council of Europe, on Wednesday presented a report on the human rights situation in the Russian-occupied territories of the country at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the organisation.
