A US-Georgia free trade agreement (FTA) would have a net positive effect for both countries, Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani told Brock Bierman, an opinion contributor for the American newspaper The Hill.

Bierman recently published an article entitled “Give Georgia a free trade agreement,” in which he called for considering building “resilience in countries under threat [...] particularly in Georgia,” 20 percent of which is occupied by Russia.

Now is the exact time for the US to take a specific concrete action that will help Georgia build a stronger economy: establish a bilateral free trade agreement,” Bierman wrote.

During a conversation with Bierman, Zalkaliani said an FTA with Georgia would help the US in “building economic resilience, well-being and bilateral trade.”

Bierman concluded his article by noting Georgia strives to deepen ties with the West, adding an FTA would be a “win-win” for both countries.
