Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Tuesday held a farewell meeting with Ambassador Marek Szczygieł, the Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia, with the latter’s diplomatic term in the country coming to a close.
At the meeting, the officials highlighted the role and importance of the EU Mission - the “only international mission” operating in Georgia to prevent escalation of the situation on the ground. The parties also discussed the “difficult” humanitarian, human rights and security situation created in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).

The Georgian state security service officials have demanded “unconditional and immediate release” of Georgian citizens, illegally arrested by the Russian occupation forces, during the 109th meeting of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism in the central Georgian village of Ergneti, the state agency said on Thursday.
Marek Szczygieł, the head of the European Union monitoring mission in Georgia, on Wednesday hosted a delegation of the Council of European Union Working Party on Eastern Europe and Central Asia in the central Georgian village of Odzisi, adjacent to the country’s Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region, to brief them about consequences of the occupation.
The European Union Monitoring Mission, the only foreign mission in Georgia observing activities adjacent to the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), celebrated the 14th anniversary of its presence in the country on Thursday.

The current situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied territories and near the occupation line, as well as security challenges in the country and “borderisation” activities on shifting the occupation line, was discussed on Wednesday by Grigol Liluashvili, the Head of the Georgian State Security Service and Toivo Klaar, the European Union's Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in the country.
