Khatuna Samnidze, an opposition MP and the Chair of the Republican Party, on Friday said Germany “stood by” Georgia and supported it in receiving the European Union membership candidate status.
In her remarks over the visit of a Georgian Parliamentary delegation, led by the Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, to Germany, Samnidze noted the fulfilment of all EU recommendations for the status made it “necessary that the Government and the opposition work together”.
Despite the fact that we openly talk about problems in the country, at all meetings there was a positive attitude that Germany stands by our country, supports the country to get the status of a candidate”, the opposition MP said.
“We must do everything to fulfil the commitment in good faith, so that the help promised to us by our partner countries is possible from their side”, Samnidze also noted.
Nikoloz Samkharadze, the chair of the Georgian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, also noted German support for granting Georgia the status, in remarks over his visit to meet colleagues in the Bundestag on Thursday.
Samkharadze noted “all” of his German counterparts had also come out in favour of Georgia receiving the candidate status in June, when the European Council instead granted the European perspective to the country.
